About Us

Vintage Classics is part of the Vintage imprint. Vintage is a highly respected paperback publisher of contemporary fiction and non-fiction, publishing writers like Philip Roth, Ian McEwan, Martin Amis and Toni Morrison. There are many Booker and Nobel Prize-winning authors on the Vintage list and the imprint publishes a huge variety of books. Vintage Classics publishes the great authors of the past.

The famous American publisher Alfred A. Knopf (1892–1984) founded Vintage Books in the United States in 1954 as a paperback home for the authors published by his company. Vintage was launched in the United Kingdom in 1990 and works independently from the American imprint although both are part of the international publishing group, Random House. Vintage in the UK is run by a small team of people working in the Random House offices in Pimlico in London.

Vintage Classics has existed since the inception of Vintage and is widely seen as the top twentieth-century classics list in the UK, publishing Graham Greene, Harper Lee, Ernest Hemingway and Virginia Woolf, among others. August 2007 sees the relaunch of the list and Vintage Classics will now also publish the greatest writers from previous centuries, such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll and Henry James.  This move is in keeping with the ambition of Vintage as a whole to bring the best writers of yesterday, today and tomorrow to as wide a readership as possible.

The new Vintage Classics have been redesigned to match the high design standards of the contemporary Vintage list. The series style is fresh, stylish and modern and they look different to any other classics available – they are easily recognisable on bookshelves due to their bold red spines.  The print inside is clear and attractively typeset and all Vintage Classics are printed on FSC-accredited, environmentally friendly paper. The full list comprises a selection of the best books from around the world and throughout history – all of which have been read and recommended by thousands of readers.
