Wallander wins BAFTA for Best Drama Series

The BBC One/Left Bank Pictures series Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh, was named best drama series at the British Academy Television Awards on Sunday, beating previous winners Dr Who, Spooks and Shameless. The series is based on the novels One Step Behind, Firewall and Sidetracked by Harvill Secker author Henning Mankell.

The Random House Group UK was one of the biggest winners tonight at the British Book Industry Awards . At the annual Booksellers Association conference in Brighton, three of the awards sometimes referred to as the "Oscars of the book industry" went to the Random House Group.

Sadie Jones' The Outcast, Marie Phillips' Gods Behaving Badly, Kill Your Friends by John Niven and Danny Scheinmann's Random Acts of Heroic Love have all been longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize, a new award for a first novel published in the UK.

Named in honour of literary agent and publisher Desmond Elliott, who died in August 2003, the Prize celebrates sparkling new fiction.
