Steve
Nobel
Steve Nobel is Director of Alternatives
at St James's Church, Piccadilly, which has long been one of the
foremost venues in this country for lectures from eminent speakers
from around the world on mind, body, spirit subjects. We asked
Steve a few questions relating to his critically accliamed book,
Freeing
the Spirit. |
|
 |
 |
Freeing
the Spirit is all about the process of growth and how we can move
from limitation to freedom in life. How would you define growth? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
Growth is what life is all
about; there is no escaping it for even when we seem to be going
in the opposite direction we are still in the process of growth.
We all grow physically and we do not have to do anything for this
to happen. I define growth as the process of consciously becoming
and being all that we can possibly be in this lifetime. This process
includes the totality of who we are i.e. our physical, emotional,
mental and spiritual selves. I believe that we are here to grow
through joy and love rather then the tried and tested way of growing
through conflict, pain and struggle. Growing through joy does
not mean avoiding anything rather it is a more embracing attitude
that sees everything as a helpful lesson in life. |
|
|
|
 |
 |
In what
ways can we grow? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
We grow when we live consciously rather
than unconsciously (that is living habitually or on automatic).
We grow through our willingness to make
mistakes.
We grow when we take a risk face and
move through our fear and inner resistance to being more in
our lives.
We grow when we align ourselves with
our Higher self (spirit) and begin to live our life in harmony
with the Universe rather than seeking to struggle against our
evolution.
We grow when we awaken a new soul quality
such as a sense of adventure, clarity, joy, or wonder.
We grow by doing something differently
and unexpected and through embracing our inner vulnerability.
We grow through relationships and being
congruent in our dealings with others.
Ultimately we grow through being loving
and always acting from love.

What are
the differences between the right and left brain? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
We all have such tremendous
power in life to help us shape and mould our lives and one level
of this power is available to our conscious mind. Since we live
in a universe of polarity our conscious mind has also two poles,
the left/yang pole and the right/yin pole. The left-brain is analytical,
goal-orientated, and logical and deals with objective reality
handling such things as boundaries and structure. The right brain
is more subjective, creative, dreamy, imaginative, and reflective
and is the part of us that looks within to the inner child and
to the soul. |
|
|
|
 |
 |
Modern
day living can so easily condition us to be 'heady' with the intellect
always on the go. How can we escape this 'left-brain' dominance
and find balance? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
Usually we end up, through early conditioning
and the education system, being either predominantly left or
right brain. Society tends to encourage more left-brain thinking
but since nature constantly seeks balance there will always
be a number of people who will rebel and go to the other pole.
This creates a society of lop-sided people.
Many people become 'heady' because they
overate the power of the intellect so much and do not believe
or experience the power of other parts of the conscious mind.
Many people who believe in the supreme power of the intellect
seek to feed that part of themselves constantly with information
and this leads to a state where they can become disassociated
from their emotions and physical bodies. 'Heady' people often
feel little connection with spirit since they are too busy analysing
everything.
The cure for such people is to embrace
more right-brain activities such as meditation and painting
and also to connect with their emotions and physical bodies.
When I feel heady I usually go for a walk in nature and then
sit for a while there in silence.
Finding balance is so important to living
joyfully.

Can you
explain the warrior and the priestess? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
The Warrior and Priestess are names
I have given these aspects of our conscious mind. The left-brain
is more yang and warrior like and the right-brain is more yin
and more priestess like. The warrior is the part of us that
is action orientated and has the ability to navigate objective
reality and is also necessary in defending the more vulnerable
parts of the psyche. The priestess is able to look within and
understand the unconscious. She has the power of inner vision
and is our link to the spiritual dimension. She is the part
that is open to inspiration. When we are balanced then the priestess
is receiving messages from our Higher self and the warrior the
acts on those impulses. For many people the inspiration that
comes through the priestess is not acted upon by the masculine,
which instead seeks to suppress the feminine. This is a major
problem for many people who have been taught not to trust their
inner feminine energy.
Another way of explaining these aspects
is that the warrior is our means of propulsion in life and our
priestess is our inner radar.

|
|
 |
 |
The power
of the conscious mind is just one aspect of who we are. Can you
explain the other layers of spirit that make up our psyche? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
The conscious mind is just one aspect
of who we are since we also have an unconscious dimension and
a spiritual dimension. Many have called the unconscious part
of us our inner child and this part governs the running of our
physical body (it regulates such things as digestion, the heart
beat, sexual energy etc.) and is also the domain of our emotional
nature. This is the part of us that laughs and cries. The inner
child is also the domain of memory and this enables us to learn
things at an unconscious level so that we can play the piano
or drive a car without having to consciously think about every
physical move we need to perform. The abilities of the unconscious
are immense yet it is often here we get the most stuck. Our
unconscious can take on a number of beliefs about life and ourselves
that are not always helpful and that need changing.
The next layer is our Higher self which
is the part of us that holds the overview of this lifetime and
why we have chosen to incarnate. This part of us exists in pure
light and works through synchronicity and miracles. It is our
personal guardian angel through life and is available to give
us help (although it will not interfere in our growth).
Aligning all three aspects of who we
are will give a tremendous boost to our ability to grow joyfully
and to create a heaven on earth rather than a desolation.
|
|
|
|
 |
 |
Yet the
nature of the psyche is only one side of the equation. To truly
free our spirit you state that we must find our connection to
the 'web of life'. What is the 'web of life' and how can we begin
to connect with it? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
So far the book has concentrated on
understanding and aligning our inner power. This is but one
side of the equation for there is also power that exists within
the universe and when we align with that power we have connected
ourselves up to a grid of energy that can help us live with
more grace, flow and miracles. We are never really separate
from this grid or web of energy for if we were we would cease
to exist.
We can connect with the web by taking
time to be in nature and to connect with its vital spirit. Wild
places have more power than parks generally and by finding the
wild places in the world we can awaken the wild power in ourselves.
The web also connects communities of people and we can feel
the power of the web moving through groups. The power of the
web is a bit like electricity, which can be used to heal or
harm and some groups use power destructively and they are to
be avoided.

The 21st
century is an age of shift - the Age of Pisces is ending and that
of Aquarius is beginning. What does this mean and what consequences
o you see this having for spirituality and helping us to free
our spirit? |
|
|
|
 |
 |
We have all heard the song from the
musical Hair about the dawning of the age of Aquarius. No one
really knows when Aquarius starts but what is happening now
is an extraordinary explosion of interest in spirituality and
magic that seems to indicate that Aquarius is near. The old
age of Pisces has been about growing through conflict and struggle
and about learning about compassion, devotion and love with
its flip side of sacrifice, martyrhood and suffering. Aquarius
on the other hand is about growing through cooperation which
allows for the possibility for win/win on the planet between
nations rather than the old model of I win therefore you lose.
For too long the spirit of humanity
has been held in a vice of dogmatic thinking and a the depressing
view that the universe is just some great machine whirling in
space. Freeing the Spirit is long overdue where we can discover
that rather than being ghosts in the machine we are bright spirits
having an amazing adventure in consciousness.
As Aquarius draws near all the old shackles
that have constrained us will break and then we will truly discover
that we are angels that can fly!
