MARKETING LINDSEY

As a marketing executive working on books published by Century and Arrow, alongside four other imprints at Random House no two books are ever the same. In any month I could be working on a gory thriller, a love story or an audiobook of the latest Century bestseller. Working on Lindsey's books is always a bit different though and I've been involved in marketing them since I started working here nearly two years ago.

~

Marketing Lindsey's books falls into three main sections. Firstly we have to promote her to bookshops of all kinds - from independent bookshops in Falmouth to, Skye to the main high street chains. This is so that they're all aware that there will be a new hardback and paperback coming. This involves putting together plot summaries, an idea of what the campaign will be, like and Lindsey's fantastic sales record over the last fifteen years! This all takes place about seven months prior to publication. So I'll be working on summer titles before I've eaten my Christmas turkey!

~

A couple of months before publication the real campaign work starts - from booking adverts in key national newspapers like the Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday and Observer and getting those adverts designed to producing promotional material for use in bookshops and for Lindsey to use on her tour. I'm sure many of you will have seen the posters we have produced over the years.

At around the same time Lindsey and I will start to put together thoughts for this very newsletter - ideas for the articles, checking the order details an making sure that everyone who wants one is going to receive one!

~

These two months up to publication and after are when things really start to get busy as Lindsey will not only be working with me on the marketing side but also on her tour and events with her publicist, Cassie, whose article you might have read in issue 4. It is these events that are listed at the back of this newsletter.

I enjoy working on Lindsey's books for lots of different reasons. Firstly it is lovely to have contact with an author on whose books I work. So often it can happen that you work on a particular book and never speak to the author. With Lindsey you can always ring or email if you're got a quick question or bit of information to pass on. And with Lindsey producing a new book every year - a formidable task! - it is great to have that continuing contact. I

Secondly it is lovely to work on something that is a bit different. Producing things like this newsletter and, the bookmarks that we did last year makes working on Lindsey's campaigns a little bit different.

And it is always good to go back to the days of my Latin GCSE and Roman history - I'm sure my teachers would be proud of me!

~

This is my first year where j been in charge of Lindsey's campaign rather than just assisting with it and I hope it will be the first of many.
