Even without science the story stands up well, with plenty of humour, both verbal and slapstick, and copious illustrations. It does rely on an element of fantasy, such as the world's second most powerful nano supercomputer disguised as a hamster!

STEPHEN HAWKING is Director of Research at the Institute of Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge; he held the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge for thirty years.
