Anna Politkovskaya


Known by many as "Russia's lost moral conscience", Anna Politkovskaya was a special correspondent for the Russian newspaper Novaya gazeta. In 2000 she was awarded the prestigious Golden Pen Award by the Russian Union of Journalists for her outspoken coverage of the war in Chechnya. She was called in by the Russian government as a negotiator during the 2002 Moscow theatre siege by Chechen separatists. Anna Politkovskaya was murded in October 2006.
