Q: What should be included in my permissions request?

A: Please include the following:

The title, author, imprint and ISBN of the book that you wish to use extracts from;
the Territories that you require (e.g. world, UK and Commonwealth etc);
the formats that you require (e.g. print, electronic, audio etc);
the title and publisher of your book;
the proposed print run and purchase price of your book;
details of the extracts that you wish to use and the context in which you wish to use them (please provide exact word counts and the pages from your book where the extracts are included)

Please do not apply if you do not yet have a publisher as we require full publishing details to be able to grant permission.

Q: How long will the permissions process take?

A: Please make sure that you send us your application in plenty of time, especially if you are working to a tight schedule. Whilst we make every effort to respond to requests as soon as we can, we receive a significant number of requests each of which has to be dealt with in turn. Furthermore, in some instances we will have to consult authors, illustrators, literary agents or other interested parties which may add more time to processing any request. Please allow 6-8 weeks for an initial response. All requests will be dealt with in order of receipt so please do not submit duplicate requests.

Q: Will a fee be charged?

A: Each case will be evaluated on an individual basis. Please note that where a permission fee applies the minimum amount charged will be £75 (plus VAT if applicable)

Q: Does my proposed use fall within fair use guidelines?

A: Limited extracts may be used free of charge if the work in which the extract is to appear is published for the purpose of criticism or review and is published for the purely academic market.

To qualify as an academic publication a book must have a total print run of 500 or less in hardback, or 1,500 or less in paperback, otherwise we reserve the right to charge full trade rates.

If a publication falls into these categories then we allow:
- The use of a single extract of up to 400 words or a series of extracts (of which none exceeds 300 words) to a total of 800 words from a prose work;
- Or extracts to a total of 40 lines from a poem provided that this does not exceed a quarter of the poem

Please note that biographies do not fall into the category and fair use does not apply to anthologies, musical settings or unpublished works.

The Society of Authors sets out its fair use guidelines on its website however these are guidelines and aren't law. Ultimately the decision is the publishers and we reserve the right to charge if we believe the aggregate amount of material quoted is substantial enough to do so.

Q: Where should I send my request to photocopy material for classroom use?

A: In the first instance please send requests to photocopy material from our books for UK schools and colleges to:
