About the Library & Archive

The Random House Group Archive & Library represents over 270 years of publishing and currently holds around a million volumes.

The library is owned by The Random House Group and contains the archives belonging to Random House and Transworld, as well as third-party clients Andersen Press, Egmont UK Limited and Octopus Publishing Group.

It includes:

  • an extensive first edition book collection
  • original artwork
  • documents and publishers' catalogues
  • editorial and publicity files
  • group contracts
  • archived author file e.g. author correspondence, publicity material, reviews etc.

The Random House Group is the only UK publisher to have a working library as well as an historic archive. Membership of the library is open to Group personnel only. We also accommodate genuine researchers by appointment.

Whether it's fact-checking when copyediting, or background information on a particular topic, the Group Archive & Library has extensive resources from the archive collection, as well as access to specialist sources. If you have a query and don't know where to turn, just get in touch!

How do I join the library ?

Joining is simple. To be able to borrow books we require: your name, job title, department address and direct phone number. You may then borrow books or files for a minimum of four weeks. Extended loans are easy to do, so if you know you will need a book for six months or more do tell us when you request it.

We will send you a reminder letter after four weeks if the book has not been returned to us, but you can renew at that point or return it to us using the internal post.

We aim to provide a next-day turnaround for loans (please call us before 4pm to guarantee this). You may bring clients to view the backlist titles by appointment.
